J.P.Morgan Spotlights a Charity in Its Annual Recommendations to Wealthy Clients

The firm’s “What’s Next” in 2023 lists 10 books, five experiences, and a nonprofit

J.P. Morgan includes, for the first time, a charitable organization as a “DEI spotlight” in its annual list of books and experiences, released Monday.

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) has gained attention in the past couple of years with the social justice movement. Policies and programs that promote the representation and participation of different groups of individuals have been adopted by governments, corporates, as well as nonprofits.

“A big focus from our clients is not only about their investment, but also about value-based ideas and concepts,” says Darin Oduyoye, chief communications officer of J.P. Morgan asset and wealth management. “This is a way to highlight the charitable organizations doing just that.”

The organization spotlighted is the London-based Mission 44, founded in 2021 by seven-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton with a personal pledge of £20 million (US$24 million). The foundation seeks to transform the lives of young people facing disadvantage and discrimination through grants, research and advocacy. One of its programs, the Ignite Partnership, funds students from low-income family and ethnic minority groups to access motorsports-related education and activities.

This year’s list of “What’s Next” also encompasses 10 books and five experiences that share the common theme-–all about illuminating and discovering ideas, Oduyoye says. The list, the 17th edition, is compiled based on recommendations from the firm’s wealth advisors across the globe.

A cultural pursuit highly recommended is the musical & Juliet, which hit Broadway last week after debuting in the West End in London in 2019. The coming-of-age musial envisions what would happen if Juliet in William Shakespeare’s tragic play Romeo and Juliet never died, Oduyoye says.

The music scores were done by producer and songwriter Max Martin, “a mastermind in pop music who has the most No. 1 hits in the entire century,” Oduyoye says, including Kelly Clarkson’s Since U Been Gone,  Katy Perry’s Roar, and Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time.

Other experiences include Museum of the Future in Dubai, which features virtual and augmented reality, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and interactive installations and displays, and a robot welcoming all visitors; Atchugarry Museum of Contemporary Art in Uruguay’s popular coastal resort Punta del Este; Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, Egypt; and Julien Fayard in Napa Valley, Calif., who is producing a wine under his label with a focus on sustainability.

Among the books recommended is How to Invest: Masters on the Craft by David M. Rubenstein. The author “interviews some of the world’s leading financial advisors and investors, including Mary Callahan Erdoes, CEO of JP Morgan Asset & Wealth Management, to reveal principles in investing, importance of philanthropy and patriotism, financial acumen, and leadership in general,” Oduyoye says.
